Josh and I finally saw Dark Knight last night - I thought this might make us the last people in North America to do so, but in fact also in the theater were a) a couple with a small baby and b) old people. I feel just fine having joined the ranks of those for whom new movies are not a top priority... That said, weapos;re totally going to Watchmen opening weekend. ::grin:: See, it comes out less than three weeks before my due date, and while obviously I would happily never see a movie again if it somehow made the difference for a healthy delivery for the meeple, the trailer looked amazing and perfect and I have asked the meeple to consider staying put until 38 weeks so I can have this last little fling with the cinema. (Especially as the new Star Trek movie is apparently unfortunately coming out in May, which is on the wrong side of that major life change. Whatapos;s wrong with February as the ideal month for new releases? Coraline is doing it...)

On the topic of upcoming movies though, I must express my absolute fury over the Whiteout movie. Whiteout is an awesome comic about a US marshal investigating a murder in Antarctica, and if you read comics you should read it, itapos;s not long and the art is amazing. However. Another cool thing about the comic is that the US marshal happens to be a woman as does one of the other main characters, and the interaction between them is an important part of the story. Do we all see where this is going? Apparently the idea of making a movie starring two women (in which nobody gets married or has cancer or adopts a baby or whatever) was just too crazy for Columbia Pictures, because the script was adapted so that that second woman has grown a dick, "since the studio was hesitant on how large of a film audience the original setup of two female leads would draw". Arrrrrrrgh Like there are not enough movies with male leads, here you have a pre-existing story with two women and you have to *rewrite* it because, oh shit, it passes the Bechdel Test, we canapos;t possibly let a feature film do that. I am not saying that every single movie needs to do a good job with female characters, but canapos;t we please have *one*, from time to time?
